Lennar Urban’s Candlestick Point Project Up for Worldwide Architectural Award

Lennar Urban recently announced that its Candlestick Point / Hunters Point Shipyard project has been short-listed for a World Architectural Festival Award.

The CP/HPS development plans are in contention for the Masterplanning award for Future Projects. Judging will occur Nov. 2-4, 2011.

The international award competition celebrates excellence in global architectural design.

“This is yet another honor for Lennar Urban, our superb team of planners and the Bayview-Hunters Point Community that provided such important input into our plans,” said Kofi Bonner, president of Lennar Urban. “We have always intended this development to be a source of great pride for San Francisco. Everyone involved in the planning process should feel good about this.”

Candlestick Point/Hunters Point Shipyard in June was awarded the prestigious Golden Nugget Grand Award for Best “On the Boards” Site Plan at the Pacific Coast Builders Conference. That award honors creative achievements in architectural design and land use planning for residential, commercial and industrial projects.

For the World Architecture Festival Awards, CP/HPS will compete for prizes along with 284 projects from around the globe

Finalists include a theater made of straw in Estonia, a soccer school in Soweto, a tree hotel in Sweden, a bamboo office in India and a moving gallery in New York.

”The WAF Awards celebrate architectural excellence the world over and allow architects to showcase their talent and their unique responses to the ever-changing economic climate,” said Paul Finch, program director for the World Architectural Festival. “There is now an increasing need for innovative approaches to architecture, inspiring architects and designers to think in new ways about buildings. It’s encouraging that the quality of this year’s entries is the highest we’ve ever seen.”

Hunters Point Shipyard Candlestick Point is a mixed-use project being developed in phases during the next two decades. Nearly two-thirds the size of Golden Gate Park, the project will nearly double the population of the Bayview, ultimately adding more than 25,000 residents to southeast San Francisco.

At full build-out, the project is planned to include: 10,500 homes for sale or rent; 885,000 square feet of retail uses; about 2,650,000 square feet of green office, science and technology, and research and development uses; a 150,000 square foot hotel; a 10,000-seat arena or other public performance facility; a 300-slip marina; either a new stadium for the San Francisco 49ers or up to 2,500,000 square feet of additional green office, science and technology, research and development, and industrial uses if the stadium is not built.
